The name hematite is derived from the Greek word for "blood" in reference to the deep red color of the powdered mineral.

Information about Hematite 

Hematite, also spelled haematite, is a lustrous mineral that appears in shades of blue-gray to silver-gray. It is categorized as an iron oxide or iron ore. When crushed, hematite turns red in powdered form and leaves a reddish streak when scratched on an abrasive surface. Beyond jewelry making, hematite is also fashioned into beads and cabochons. In ancient Egypt, hematite was carved into scarab figures. Significant hematite deposits are found in England, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and the Lake Superior region of North America.
